Will Andrew Strauss and co do it this time?
England cricket selectors have named a 16-man squad for the five-test ashes series in Australia starting on 25th of November in Brisbane. The return of Kevin Pietersen after he was dropped for the series against Pakistan gives England a full batting contingent for the ashes.
Steve Davies’s success as an opener in the English squad has made him the probable back up as a wicket keeper for Matt Prior. Injury to Graham Onions and the retirement of Ryan Sidebottom has paved the way for the young pacer Ajmal Shahzad who made a promising debut against the Bangladeshis. An alternative to Shahzad is Chris Tremlett who enjoyed a fine season with Surrey.
Chris Tremlett is a tall pace bowler who made his test Debut in 2007 but unfortunately because of no place in the team, he was shown the door playing only 3 Test matches. But, now he has been called up for the Ashes.
A more interesting debate is the choice of a backup spinner for Swann, the key member of the English attack. So as a backup for Swann the England selectors call upon the Indian origin cricketer Monty Panesar. The selectors were tempted about his performance for the Surrey’s. Panesar was the spearhead of the English team for some time, but removed from the team after bad performances.
Geoff Miller, when asked about the best English team since 1986/87 who is one of the Selectors said:
I think so, but it is the quality that is there. There is more of the top quality there than I think what we have had before. I am talking about the amount of quality, here are match winners the whole way through there.
So I am not saying we are going to walk this … but I am quietly confident.
We have been preparing this for 18 months so we know there is going to be the psychological warfare. The players know that, so that has been part of the learning process. Everything has been taken into consideration.
England has not won any test game in Australia since 2 decades. The 16-man leave for Australia on Oct 29.
