Day 3, Braboune stadium, IND VS SL
Oh might!!! I couldn’t beleive this. Sehwag Sehwag. The Nawab fell 7 runs short of what was the world record of three triple centuries in test cricket. The man, who had dominated Muttiah Muralitharan like no other batsman ever did, finally fell to him, offering a dolly. Murali fumbled at first and then completed the catch to put the curtains on a magnificent knock of 293. Sehwag’s innings lasted for 366 minutes and was punctuated with 40 boundaries and 7 sixes.
India declared at 726 for 9 in the final session, soon after India captain MS Dhoni scored a century in style, hammering Herath for a mighty six over long on. He shared an unbeaten 56-run partnership for the 10th wicket with Ojha and his innings included three 4s and six 6s. In reply, Sri Lanka were 11 for no loss at stumps after 3 overs, still trailing by 322 runs.
The Nawab-Wall partnership for the second wicket was finally breached at 237. It was second occasion when India had put two double century partnerships for the first two wickets. In 2008, India had achieved the feat against South Africa in Chennai, where Sehwag had got a triple century.
In the other end Dravid survived an edge which the umpire missed. He edged an outgoing delivery of Chanaka Welegedara falling short of a century by 26 runs. By the time Dravid got out, Tendulkar was at 22 in the other end.
Tendulkar and Laxman put on a 101 run partnership for the 4th wicket. While Tendulkar was playing quietly Murali and Herath found some rhythm as Muttiah Muralidharan bowled his first maiden of the test after bowling 75 overs. Laxman continued punishing Welegedara and went from 27 in 64 balls to 50 in 79. But soon, looking for a big shot off Murali, he was done in by a doosra.
The Sri Lankans picked up four wickets to send India crashing down from 536 for 3 at lunch to 615 for 7. The second session surely went to the Sri Lankan bowlers who got in rhythm after four sessions of hard work and no good result.
Murali, who bowled with an injured right hand and using his feet to field, representing very much the beaten figure his team had been reduced to, enjoyed better luck. Harbhajan was bowled when going for a reverse-sweep, Kulasekara took a good tumbling catch to dismiss Zaheer.
Dhoni contributed to the 10th wicket unbeaten stand with Pragyan Ojha for 56 runs. After a stammering six to get his century he declared the innings with 726 on the board and 333 runs lead.
In the Sri Lankan batting, Dhoni attacked with Harbhajan and Ojha bowling on both ends. But the Lankans managed 11 runs without loosing any wicket.
